TROODOS UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK

Your journey begins with a visit to the Troodos UNESCO Global Geopark in the village of Amiantos. Here, you will discover one of the world’s most remarkable geological treasures—a section of ancient oceanic crust and the Earth’s upper mantle that formed approximately 90 million years ago, nearly 8,000 metres beneath the sea.

The geological history of Cyprus is closely connected to the formation and uplift of the Troodos Mountains. Through a series of unique and complex geological processes, the Troodos Ophiolite emerged above sea level, making Cyprus an internationally recognised geological prototype that has significantly contributed to the scientific understanding of ocean formation and the evolution of our planet.

Today, visitors to the forested peaks of Troodos can explore rocks that once lay deep beneath an ancient ocean, offering a truly unique geological experience.

Officially designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015, the park covers approximately 1,147 km² (around 137,000 hectares), representing almost 45% of the Troodos mountain range and 15% of the total area of Cyprus.

Beyond its outstanding geology, the Geopark showcases the region’s rich biodiversity, spectacular mountain landscapes, traditional villages, cultural heritage, and centuries-old customs that continue to shape local life.

Holy Cross Church (Timios Stavros), Pelendri

Nestled on the southern edge of the picturesque mountain village of Pelendri, the Church of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros) is one of Cyprus’ most treasured Byzantine monuments and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Painted Churches in the Troodos Region.”

Originally built during the 12th century, the church gradually evolved from a small domed chapel into the impressive three-aisled basilica seen today. Its architectural development reflects the enduring faith and cultural heritage of the mountain communities of Cyprus.

Inside, visitors are greeted by an extraordinary collection of Byzantine frescoes dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Among its greatest treasures are the rare late-12th-century wall paintings and magnificent 14th-century murals, celebrated for their vivid colours, exceptional craftsmanship, and expressive depictions of biblical scenes and saints. These masterpieces are regarded among the finest examples of Byzantine art on the island.

The church also reflects Cyprus’ fascinating medieval history. During the Lusignan period, one of its aisles served as a private chapel for members of the Lusignan noble family, illustrating the coexistence of Eastern Orthodox traditions and Western European influences.

Today, the Church of the Holy Cross remains both an active place of worship and a remarkable cultural landmark, offering visitors an inspiring journey through more than eight centuries of Cypriot history, art, architecture, and faith.
